NEXT SESSION: February 24th, 2018

Our Guest Speaker will be:  A Counsellor from the Cares Counselling & Restoration Services.

The guest speaker will be a counsellor from the Cares Counselling & Restoration Services in Abbotsford. He will speak on the topic of depression.

“Caregivers’ risk for experiencing depression is 30 times greater than that of non-caregivers, particularly among those caring for Alzheimer’s and dementia loved ones, according to the National Institutes of Health.

In an effort to provide the best possible care for a family member or friend, caregivers often sacrifice their own physical and emotional needs and the emotional and physical experiences involved with providing care can strain even the most capable person. The resulting feelings of anger, anxiety, sadness, isolation, exhaustion—and then guilt for having these feelings—can exact a heavy toll. But don’t accept that depression is par for course.”

Our speaker will talk about signs and symptoms and ways of dealing or avoiding becoming depressed.

PLEASE NOTE:  We have changed the venue for our Sessions….The ANAVET’s Hall at Mt. Lehman, 30346 McNeil Avenue, Abbotsford, B.C.  (5900 block on Mt. Lehman Road, west of railway intersection.)

Our SIDE BY SIDE project features support sessions on the last Saturday morning of the Month, where interactive presentations on identified health issues are shared by health professionals and fellow caregivers. Each session is facilitated by our Community Support Coordinator, a professional experienced in caregiving and support. Topics may include:

Cancer
Dementia
Diabetes
Mental Health
Heart Disease
Stroke
Children needing care
Nutrition & Obesity

Come and meet others dealing with the similar issues, and where ongoing support groups and resources of respite care may develop.

Coffee and/or muffin and lunch are included at the sessions for participants.  We realize the importance of a safe space and healthy nourishment for caregivers and any who need an extra “break time”!
